Neue Nationalgalerie

1968Berlin, Germany

Neue Nationalgalerie
Museum at Berlin’s Kulturforum: a vast roof slab, glass pavilion, and underground galleries in two layers. Ground level is nearly empty universal space; most display goes below. Read it as Crown Hall translated into a civic cultural building.

Highlights

  • Glass hall above — Is the empty box exhibition, or a civic foyer?
  • Roof span — How do column positions define the center of space?
